June 26 Flight Training

What a fantastic start of day for Osprey watching.  An initial lunch update showed a very active mama.   She was flying laps, hovering over the nest and talking the whole time.  At least one baby was in evidence.  But when we went out in the evening, we saw no signs of the babies.  Some concern set in, since papa was also absent.  But 10 minutes after our arrival, papa showed up with a fish for supper.

Under 10 minutes after daddy shows up with supper, mama takes off, fish in claw.  She did circuits for at least 10 minutes, with touch and goes, all the while holding the chick's supper in her claws and chattering the whole time.  Our optimistic theory was she was using the fish to keep the kids attention for training.  The pessimist was scared the kids were dead since we did not see them.

These next few shots were of her 5 second hover...

She landed and only stayed a moment.

There's supper kids!
